Some of the oldest living vines in the world are Albariรฑo vines and are up to 300 years old. (For comparison, the oldest known grapevine in the world is over 400 years old.) 3. Itโ€™s common to see the word โ€œAlbariรฑoโ€ on Spanish labels unlike other areas which label by region. 4. Spanish and Portuguese winemakers have always treasured freshness with Albariรฑo and donโ€™t age in oak. Today however, you can find a few producers making rich oak-aged styles with brioche-like aromas. 5. The grapes are tiny with thick skins. Not only does this make Albariรฑo harder to produce, but it also results in a distinct raw-almond or citrus-pith like bitterness from the skinโ€™s phenol content. 6. Most Albariรฑo vineyards have a very different look. ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿฅ‚Paula Kornell Brut goes great with burgers ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿฅ‚Paula Kornell Brut goes great with burgers!๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ” Thatโ€™s not news to โ€œfizz fanatics,โ€ but the name Paula Kornell may be, despite the Kornell name being deeply entrenched in Napa Valley wine culture. Paulaโ€™s father, having survived the Nazi concentration camp Dachau, brought to the USA with him a love for his native German sekt (sparkling wine) and after many years was able to realize his dream with the purchase in Napa of the famous Larkmead estate, which he established as Hans Kornell Champagne Cellars in 1958. The winery was a valley staple until the Kornellโ€™s had to close it in 1992. It was a period of major change in Napa, as the market shifted from traditional varieties like French Colombard and chenin blanc to chardonnay and sauvignon blanc. Major investment from Franceโ€™s largest Champagne houses also rocked the boat and made it hard for Kornell and other โ€œchampagneโ€ producers to compete. Paula continued worked in the Napa wine industry in various capacities, including a stint as President of the Napa Valley Vintners association, a title her father also held decades earlier. By 2017, she was back to making her own wine and in 2019, the heritage of Kornell sparkling wines was revived with the Paula Kornell label of Napa valley sparkling wines. This Brut is her new entry level wine, a methode Champenoise blend of 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir which Paula sources exclusively off sustainably farmed vineyards in some of the stateโ€™s coolest growing regions. Disgorged in April โ€˜22, this has the lusciously ripe fruit which California does so well, but with plenty of acidity, texture and freshness, making it a real charmer. Itโ€™s both satisfying and easy to drink, this wine overdelivers not only on value, but on style and with a real connection to American winemaking history.
