Description
Vineyards
Gist Ranch is located about 14.5 miles southeast of the Fogarty winery. The vineyard features steep slopes perched at well over 2000 ft. of elevation. The rocky soils are low in nutrients and well-drained perfect for the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The site features a mix of French clones and low-vigor rootstocks combined with tighter spacing to accentuate the characteristics of our mountain climate. At 2200 feet, this is one of the highest new plantings of Cabernet and Merlot in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Tasting Notes
Cabernet with darker fruit and good weight. The wines have a sturdy character to them that suggests they will age quite well. The nose is exotic in classic Santa Cruz Mountains fashion: forest floor, orange peel and black cherry. The mouth has a slightly darker fruit profile with snappy acidity, mountain tannin and good concentration. We think this is a classic vintage of Cabernet, one that will likely live for a decade plus.
